Mic and recording technology made great advances during that time. I personally like the "older" sound though.

What a crowd, he was the greatest. Such an awesome awesome voice. Very few try to imitate it. He is very very special.

The man of many costumes. I have never seen him in concert, but have heard he puts on a better show than anyone. I can believe that, he always looks great and such a perfect voice. Yes, he is gay, but it doesn't seem to have affected his voice, does it, lol?

Actually it does sound like a very hard voiced piano with Helpinstill pickups with some compression/EQ added to it. Contrast with the 1974 live stuff - same piano, same pickups, completely different sound.

If you watch the 'Benny and The Jets' video of this concert you will see it's definitely him playing. But I see what you mean about the sound

@77edster 2 things it could be - God awful mics on the piano, or it is indeed the CP80 that's playing and Elton isn't. It does sound *very* electronic.

Look at the size of that grand piano! There's over 400,00 people in Central Park....and he plays it off like nothing! Elton John is simply brilliant!

...those days... HIS VOICE IS SO GREAT!! - no autotune! This version is superior, whish we had a HD DVD. Love the arrangements at that time.

@sprintbass vocally and musically, his peak was in the early 1970s, when he first started. he was going through personal and professional hell in the 80s, which came from drug addiction and bolemia, which lead to polyps being removed from his vocal chords, in a surgery that almost ended his career as a performer. I would hardly call that a "peak." not to mention, there are only like 4 songs that were written in the 80s that are "hits."
