I know what it's like to have a grave yard as a friend.

I was blown away when he played this at the beginning of the show. Those VH1 executives and their families packed in the House Of Blues didn't know what to make of this. But Sir Reg, threw us old school fans a bone. He is absolutely amazing performing this. So refreshing to hear ANYTHING off Tumbleweed Connection performed live. "So keep well, keep well old friend and have another drink on me"

"I may be just a talkin' old soldier but I know how it feels to grow old." So many old soldiers didn't know! Gotta give Bernie and EJ lots of credit for this tune! As a "talkin' old soldier" it moves me!

That's right. Lesley Duncan wrote "Love Song" and she sang on it as well. The next time Elton released a recording of a song he didnt' write was when he released "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" as a single in 1974. If I recall, the B-side of that single was his cover of John Lennon's "One Day At A Time". The next year would see Elton cover the Who classic, "Pinball Wizard" from the movie version of "Tommy".

Elton and Bernie cowrote 9 of the ten songs on Tumbleweed Connection, including this one. "Love Song", is the lone cover, and its writer, Lesley Duncan, sang the vocal with Elton on this recording. For some reason I think Talking Old Soldiers was either inspired by, or dedicated to David Ackles. Perhaps that is why you thought Taupin didn't write this one.
