I was at the show at Joe Louis in Detroit. No, there nwere no backing tapes. I think the beginning, when the robot came out that was from the album but when the music started it was all live. Also I think the beginning of Tightrope may have been from the album BUT I DON'T MIND THAT!!! We're talking about a 90 minute concert with less that 3 minutes of tapes. and during those times,the staage was dark. So they were not trying to fool anyone.

I believe no tape with this one. t is a "vocoder" - Richard Tandy playing/singing the background vocals - Along with Jeff and Kelly. You can hear it by itself at 3:16 singing "twilight" and then again at 3:40.

Sorry folks, I have lodged a copyright infringement...18 of the stage tour photos I took in Birmingham, UK, at the NEC on the 12th December 1981...It was a great night...I will always give my work cheap if not for free if asked politely, but please ask first...a credit gets me more work...surprised to see this after 32 years though!

Wow, I'm sitting here with goosebumps listening to this. I was at that concert at Ingleston in Scotland. The stage was completely dark and a white laser light shone out to the audience from the robot while it spoke the prologue, then the lights came up and there stood my musical hero's, The mighty ELO and rock god Jeff Lynne. I was 16 and it was the best concert I have ever been to and been a lifelong fan ever since.

yeah, it's pretty obvious when they switch between the recorded stuff and live...I was pretty disappointed with that, but on the other hand I can understand Jeff's frustration with not being able to reproduce a lot of that multi-layered stuff live..

Just to remind you that this recording,ISNT from the Edinburgh,Ingleston gig(its from Germany)but the one were reffering to is the last ELO gig in Scotland.

it's a fact that some of the live at wembley they are lip syncing...listen to standing in the rain, sounds exactly like the record...it is in fact from the album...some of the other stuff is live

@lonstar70 Maybe not on the Time tour, but they were definitely using backing tapes on the Out Of The Blue tour. The cellists were running back and forth onstage like heavy metal guitarists. There's no way they could have been playing their instruments with any kind of accuracy while bouncing around the stage like that. And there's no way they could have gotten those big vocal harmonies with just Jeff and Kelly singing live.

Respond to this video... By the way listen to some of there other live recordings and you will know this is true!The concert I was at the trick started skipping during the song!Just like Queen would never perform the multi track part of Bohemian Rhapsody in concert!~It was piped in~
