David's Broadway Station

Yes we are playing ten songs by Kern instead of the usual 9 songs because Kern was that prolific! Here's my favorite version of a great love song from "Show Boat" entitled "Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man"....I adore that Ella includes the verse to this song because in this instance...the verse is pure heaven! Gershwin had an influence on Kern in this instance...you can hear that bluesy tone in the song....this is DBS...and tomorrow we will pay tribute to probably my favorite Broadway and Hollywood composer of all: Harold Arlen! "Home without him/ain't no home to me" Love it! When Ella recorded these songbooks for Verve, she tried to stay in the melody line as much as possible because she realized that the composer or some of the composers would hear her renditions...normally she loved to scat and invent on the spot just like Sarah Vaughan did! So we end with a song from "Show Boat" just as we started with perhaps the greatest Broadway song ever written "Ol' Man River"! In Kern's case, I could literally spend the entire night playing his music...he was that prolific! For instance I love "Long ago and Far away" from "Cover Girl" so much as well as Kern's "I'm Old Fashioned" and "The song is you"! So I'll bid you a good evening and hope that you tune into this frequency tomorrow when we focus on Harold Arlen...son of a cantor! This is DBS....!
