Edith Piaf first sang this song in 1948 in her native language. Please do not say that The Browns cover version is the original.

Tres bien. Edith has a slight 'Hillbiily twang' .

Although Edith Piafs version is interesting, I personally prefer Nana Mouskouri and The Browns. Very interesting contrast.

The French version is better in part because of the harmony, and the arrangement was better. Edith's vocals are outstanding in both her English and French versions of this song.

I much prefer Ediths french version with the male choir -it would be hard to beat that version, but credit is due she was a fantastic singer R.I.P.

I like her French version better, but I have it also by the "Singing Kettles" ..I have all Edith's albums..and English is not her first language..the beauty of her voice shines through x♥

I'm sorry, but both Edith Piaf's voice and Proust's writing make me want to take a cheese grater to my face.

I LOVE THIS AND THE BROWNS

While I do love and honour the memory and legacy of the Songbird, this side idolatry, the definitive version in English is the Jim Ed Brown version-- perhaps it was the coincidence of the name, who knows? If you love the Songbird, remember her by listening to the original, in French, with the Compagnons de la Chanson. Although there's this to be said: if she did a song, French or English, it's gonna stick in your mind!
