For those questioning the opening lines of the song yes this is the "cleaned up" radio version. The programme being broadcast was for children so the idea of snorting coke or using profanities would have been a no no, especially in seventies Britain where certain standards were still being desperately upheld against the increasing tide of smut (god bless the comic character that was Mrs Whitehouse!) Still at least it gave the younger generation a chance to hear bands such as Eddie and the hot rods and then buy the original versions!

Canvey Island pub rock was RNB played at 100 mph with the intensity and rawness of when rnr started,and the anger and fuck offedness of punk-Eddie and the Hot Rods,Dr Feelgood,The Count Bishops(were they from there too???)etc etc

First of all: It's not meant to be a joke song. Second, this is from the 70's...back then teens weren't killing themselves over being "depressed". Third, listen to the lyrics..they are sarcastic, he's saying that he's "depressed" because he's non-conformist & people treat him like a pariah just because he different. He's not talking about having actual "clinical depression", he's just talking about feeling like an outsider.
