The first time I saw EWF was at the Beacon Theatre in NYC. I was in my kitchen where I lived in Plainfield NJ on a Sunday afternoon when the phone rang! It was a guy I call the man with the hands, Al. He said Bobby you ain't gonna believe this, I'm in this place and they got two tickets left for Earth Wind and Fire, $75! I said get it and I'll pay you when I see you! I had practically every EWF album that ever came out. One of the things that I loved about Earth Wind and Fire is that they were leading you to Christ and you didn't even know it! Keep your head to the sky, translation have Faith, Devotion, thats works, be devoted to what you're trying to do! The good book says that Faith without works is dead faith, translation, if you want your prayers answered get off your knees and hustle, do something, don't just sit there and pray! I meet up with Al and guess what, I don't have the money to pay him like I'd promised, I went to the ATM machine at the 711 up the street from where I was working as a computer operator, they had at the time 60 million dollars of computers and DASD devices there. It's called the HUB, I was working for the State of NJ. I reached in my freaking wallet and the card is simply not there! I call the bank and tell them and made arrangements to get a new card. good thing I had enough gas to get home.Went went into the 6,000 seat theatre and the crowd was waiting in the lobby. There was a Phillip Bailey look alike in the lobby, complete with long hair, trying to attract attention. Then I heard it, that mystical music that sounds like an interlude or something of that nature coming from in the theatre! I went to the doors and peaked inside. It was obviously some sort of sound check because the band wasn't on stage.Finally we go in and the sound man is there on the left. I couldn't resist the urge to talk to him. He said "we got 110,000 watts RMS stereo!" He assured me that the show would be great in spite of the fact that Maurice wasn't there. We were seated in the 14th row. In the Stone was played first. They had bass bins that had 4 18 inch speaker inside each cabinet, They had four of them on each side along with the mids and highs! That kick drum was kickin so hard that I thought myself "Man somebody could have a heart attack from the Kick alone! I told Al, " watch this guy, Phillip,he's got like a freak of nature voice, he hits notes so high that you can't even believe you're ears at times! Sheldon Reynolds Reynolds was on guitar, a recent addition to the group. I can't be 100% sure of this but it seemed as if Phillip had told him, "if you have any problems just give the nod and I'll take over". That's just my opinion based on what I saw.All during the show I'm thinking, "how do they stay so tight"? The horns were just mind blowing and the arrangements were just totally ridiculous! Al said of the show, "tightest f*****n band I've ever seen in my life"!The band that I'm with, Celebration, had a gig that weekend and I paid Al the $75 when I saw him on the gig!AWESOME Concert! Worth every nickel! Robert
