Eagles - Doolin Dalton Lyrics

G. Frey, J. Browne, D. Henley, J.D. Souther)

They were doolin, doolin-dalton

High or low, it was the same

Easy money, and faithless women

Red eye whiskey for the pain.

Go down little dalton, it must be God's will

Two brothers lyin dead in Coffeeville.

Two voices call to you from where they stood,

"Lay down your lawbooks now, they're no damn good."

Better keep on movin, doolin-dalton

Till your shadow sets you free.

And if you're fast, and if you're lucky,

You will never see that hangin tree.

Well the towns lay out across the dusty plain

Like graveyards filled with tombstones waitin for the names

And a man could use his back or use his brains

But some just went stir-crazy Lord cause nothin ever changed

Till they're doolin Neville Dalton

He was workin cheap, just buyin time

And then he laughed and said I'm goin

And so he left that peaceful life behind

Great tune, but there's a couple of mistakes in the accompanied lyrics printed above. In verse 2, it's not "little dalton", but Bill Dalton, the historical outlaw from the later 1800's. Also, in the last verse, it's not, "Till they're doolin Neville Dalton", it's "Till Bill Doolin met Bill Dalton", both historic outlaws. Bill Doolin was a founder of the Wild Bunch gang who later joined up with the Dalton Gang which was founded by the Dalton Brothers, Gratton, Bob & Emmett (Who ironically started out as lawmen). Bill Dalton originally rode with the Wild Bunch (& Bill Doolin) but later joined up with his brothers in the Dalton Gang along with Bill Doolin. There's a great documentary on Netflix about the "History of the Eagles". It's 3 hours in length but covers their entire history including the concept of the Desperado album, the photography & where it was shot, as well as the influence the Dalton Gang story had on that concept album.

Before politicized production/lyrics. When there was just a vignette to be told, and music was a good option. Christ, I miss good ol' simple shit like this.
