As children, my sisters and I were told by our mother that we would learn German because "it is the language of music". We took her word for it - she had, after all, had a music master's degree, voice and concert organ as majors. A soon-developed obsession with Callas, however, had me frustrated that I couldn't speak Italian. Even so, as I later embarked on an operatic career (mostly Italian), my mother stood firm, reminding me of my other two loves, Wagner and Strauss.... . I have long, long since thanked my mum and realised how profoundly deep and infinitely rich the German language/music/poetry is (I even convinced my Greek husband of this!). It can tear at your heart and rip your soul with its sheer beauty and simplicity. Also, I will always be thankful for the ability to appreciate beauty. Not all people really can. Let us, the blessed ones, not take it for granted. Thank you for posting one of the most sublime Lieder.
