I admit, that song is my guilty pleasure. Purely because of the interesting groove Steve Smith played in that song.

The drummers from the 60s, 70s and 80s wrote the book on style and grace for a lot of contemporary music. Its to bad todays players do not have access to the culture we came from, you will never see the kind of players or music again from such a great time period in our country. Steve Smith is a class act !!

I watched this, then went back to the 1983 Tokyo performance. You can hear the pattern he shows. The hit on the cymbal adds a little twinkle of brightness. I never would have noticed it if I hadn't watched this.

Of the very biggest pop songs since like 1980, this is in the top three drum parts.

The song itself is something that most drummers wouldn't admit to liking. When it was released, I was a senior in high school. After hearing it a few times, I realized there was something really cool going on with the drums, but most of my butt rock buddies would laugh at me, until I told them "listen to the drums, really listen." It is really hard to play, and it sounds awesome. I never got a chance to see how he did it. Even the MTV live video only showed him for a few seconds at a time. I'm really glad to find this. Clears up a lot of questions.

Okay so he does play this beat with an open handed set-up., which in a lot of ways is an advantage imo. I've never watched him play it so that makes sense. The way he hits the toms and ride bell wouldn't be plausible from a traditional/match grip, obviously because of the fact you've got your arms crossed. Plus he hits the ride bell a couple of different times during the verse on 1 + 2 + 3 AND 4 + 1 + 2 + THREE + 4 +...It does add such a cool sound opposed to just the first beat he did, which is okay of course, but very basic. Steve is the man!

It's interesting that both his legs are continuously hopping yet he's not playing the HH or BD with ever hop.

Clocks all over the world are now resetting themselves to Steve's time! I must admit, I cheat and play the 8th notes with my left foot and do my goofing around on the kit from there. Hopefully Steve will find the forgiveness to pardon that!
