Standing in the darkness

Waiting for the light

The smell of pure adrenaline

Burning in the night

Random blinding flashes

Aiming at the stage

Intro tape begins to roll

Igniting sonic rage

Still they keep me between these hollow walls

Hoping to find in me

The answers to the test that stumped them all

"The boy is simply crazy

Suffering from delusions

We honestly think that maybe

He might need an institution

He lives in a world of fiction

And really could use some help

We have just the place to fix him

To save him from himself"

Curled up in the darkness

Searching for the light

The smell of stale sweat and shit

Steaming through the night

Random urine testing

Pills red, pink and blue

Counselling and therapy

Providing not a clue

Still they keep me between these hollow walls

Hoping to find in me

The answers to the test that stumped them all

"We can't seem to find the answers

He seemed such a clear cut case

We cannot just let him leave here

And put all this work to waste

Why don't we try shock treatment

It really might do some help

We have just the tools to fix him

To save him from himself"

What does being more creative has to do with being influenced from someone? And if you want to hear it from the band themselves - "Influences for the album's writing and recording, according to the authors, include Metallica's Master of Puppets, Radiohead's OK Computer (and also a Radiohead bootleg Portnoy brought in), Pantera's Vulgar Display of Power and song "Mouth for War"..."

Ah, I knew we were not in much disagreement. Yeah Metallica's old stuff is the stuff I can stand. And you're right, they had no competition at the start but I suspect that's because they knew how to be original, and I think they did a good job at that. But no band is close to DT except maybe Symphony X but I don't listen to them much. When it comes to songwriting/lyrical talent, (the melody, not the structure) than it's hard to compare. Music is in the ear of the beholder.

While that's true, the only members talented in Metallica were Cliff and Mustaine, one of them ran of amd made another band, while the other one died. After them, Metallica never recovered in any way...therefore Metallica just isn't good enough to be compared to Dream Theater, I learned to play many Metallica song on the guitar a few months after I started playing it and my friend is a better drummer than Lars, the ONLY reason they are famous is because they had no competition in the begining

I said I agree about how talented Metallica is. But there are videos of Petrucci telling us how influenced he is by Metallica's sound. They were the first to make a heavy-metal sound without a fast-paced beat. Please give them a little credit for their contribution. SOME of their songs are a little catchy at times.

Oh I definitely understand that. But there are two different kinds of talent that influence what music sounds like, instrumental and songwriting. Metallica (like most bands) know nothing of instrumental talent, but the unique songwriting talents of Metallica produced a wonderful heavy sound that changed metal forever.

so untrue, but fine, whatever belive what you want to belive...Every single member of Dream Theater is waaaaay more creative and talented than any Metallica member...
