Firstly there is no Best in music, just incredible muso's with different strengths, and Marco fits in perfectly with The Aristocats, who are master muso's as well. My personal pref bandwise is TA over DT..... just saying!

I don't want to open up a whole "Mangini is better/not better than Portnoy" thing, I'm sure it's been done a billion times already, but, this is pretty awesome stuff Mangini is playing here. I also am a pretty big DT fan but they've lost something since Portnoy has been gone. I listen to the stuff that Portnoy is doing now like Transatlantic and that stuff is friggin' terrific (go listen to The Whirlwind) and it just seems like DT is stuck in this "mopey, death-y, mental disorder-y" thing they can't break out of. When was the last time DT played an entire song in a major key? Ever? The last incredibly awesome section of music they've written on the past two albums was the second verse of Lost Not Forgotten. Almost all of it in a major key, and although no Portnoy, that was a seriously incredible groove. Then the song, which doesn't suck, but, right back in to a minor key like the entire rest of everything else they do. Images and Words sounds a lot like the last two albums. Maybe I've just outgrown Dream Theater and need to hear different stuff.

I still can't believe there are idiots out there that keep saying "they should have chose Marco Minneman!!", what a load of tosh, Mangini is 10x the drummer he is as proved at the auditions, having seen Mangini live with DT just blew me away and i was and still am a Portnoy fan but if the truth be known, Mangini just fits perfect for DT and long may it continue

If we say in the term of soloing, Mike Mangini is on the same stage level as Thomas Lang IMO.I love them both when they do their solos, because they are singing a very beautiful "song" within their skillful solos. Bravo.

Look people, I love Mike Portnoy as much as any of you and he has done some amazing work with DT over the years. However, in every aspect of percussion, Mangini is the better of the two. No one would bitch about having Portnoy playing in their band and he is a fairly well rounded player with a lot of power and great timing. He just isn't as dynamic and he hasn't really been pushing himself to innovate. It's cool that he wants to just go rock out and not have the annoyance of mixing song parts into set lists in different ways, almost every single performance, over just having some fun. That day may come for Mangini in 30 years, (if they are still at it when they are singing with their dentures in LOL,) but he is the perfect candidate to beat the drums behind DT because they will continue doing what they have done for years with complex melodic compositions, odd time signatures, and various styles. He is a perfect fit and I like what they've done so far and hope they'll hit another home run like Scenes or Six Degrees.

I actually have nothing against drum soloing, but I don't like it when they play so long just alone on the stage. I prefer it when you combine the song and the solo.

God I love this guy. Any limb or combination of limbs can do anything at any time. Portnoy's drum work, a decent drummer can deconstruct and play most of it with a little practice (the more he made himself in charge of every aspect of DT, the less he tried as a drummer, so his parts became predictable). Mangini? Even if I managed to figure out all of what he is doing, I could still never do it no matter how much I practiced.

Tiresome, time to go to the bar.DT really are a soulless band.Like Robots trying to understand human emotion.

You don't have to have great technique to be a great drummer. (Just listen to Ringo Starr) Great technique helps you say what you want to say musically. It's all about what you have to say. I think Mike Mangini is a great technical player, I just don't care for the style of language he uses to say what he has to say. He is technically brilliant but speaks in a dialect most don't understand.

In my opinion, this sounds like a funny car going through multiple stages before the race, with the quarter mile race included and concluded. I Love it!!! As I see it, It's clearly a masterpiece of musicianship. Those that agree will press thumbs up. All others are DMF,s

Virgil doesn't move me. Of course, lovers of adornment show no discernment. You're simply in love with pushing the envelope. This entire genre is faux art because it's a sport. Who's the fastest, who's the heaviest, who has the largest kit. Nothing to say about the more nuanced and poignant things in life that are neglected with superlatives. Consequently, I don't consider this very grown up music.

speed anyway it's a part of drumming, Chris Coleman and Virgil Donati are fast, but not only that. you have the mental flexibility of a chair, they did their choice, what to play, what to improve, and they took their lifetime to develop their skills. you are the typical nonsense critic, "i don't like what they do, so they're wasting their life jerking off with sticks". well, they are playing around the world and you are not. you are free to have your personal taste, but stop complaining

Yawn. If I thought drumming was about bpm, I'd resign myself to watching kitchen appliances. You just confirmed again why I hate this prog metal abomination. It's all about jerking off to statistics. Might as well watch a MAB video.

if you think that playing single strokes at 300 bpm or more, is accessible (kollias feet go at 280 bpm), doing a 5/4 ostinato with left hand and a 4/4 solo with right hand is technically average, or CREATE a technique for fast hands is nothing imaginative, then or you must be the best drummer in the world, which i don't believe, or you have no idea what a drum is.

Tommaso Temporin

sure, because he's doing only fast things... actually he's using ambidexterity, independence, crazy ostinatos, he's playing with tones, dynamic and great coordination. shame on you that can see only speed..
