Thank you, Clyde Clifford, and the power of KAAY for bringing this to Mobile in the late 60's.

It doesn't matter how Tom Waits uses his influences of Beefheart and Dr. John...in the end his work is superits just a different Beefheart and a different Dr. John. By the way both had their influences just compare thevoice of Howlin'Wolf and Beefheart. But that's not what counts its what each artist did on their records andeach of the artists I've mentioned have a solid fantastic and beautiful body of work. I cannot do without anyof their records.

I first heard this on 95.5 KLOS late at night on the way home from work over a decade ago. I completely forgot about it and just randomly found it here on the tubes. Play this and some Tom Waits back to back.

when i was young, if my folks were having party and it lasted too long someone would invariably put on Dr. John's Gris Gris Gumbo Ya Ya, or Return of Son of Monster Magnet-Mothers of Invention. Believe you me, within minutes even the most hardened hipsters would start sensing he/she were having bad flashbacks and start packing their bulgar and wheat germ and cinching up their bedrolls..nervously glancing for nearest exit. it NEVER failed. * footnote..i once played this album for perfectly sober, clear-thinking grown lady. she started sobbing and swearing that Dr. John's was the deep raspy voice of the devil!
