If memory serves, Donovan had peaked and now wanted to control his sound instead of a producer controlling it. He wanted more bass in his recordings and he got it. I like the "Open Road" album where this song comes from. It's much more a band record than a solo Donovan record. He intended to tour with these musicians, but it didn't work out. Not long after this, the effects of non stop recording and touring since 1965 caught up with him and his ride at the top was pretty much over. But his music is still heard to this day.

I'm I wrong in hearing something similar with song in some led-zeppelin songs. anyway if not, then at least the athmosphere could be a bit similar. I mean those led-zeppelin songs that are not so rocking. Or then then it could be so that it was popular in some circles to sound a bit 'celtic' those days. maybe a song 'no quarter' has some same 'spookines' as this song.

@LindaMewhirter You're right. I wish everyone knew this stuff too... I felt so glad when I found Donovan's Music that I recorded a tribute to donovan's music and words... it was home-made, but it's filled with love for music and for donovan's art as well... It's on my channel... if you want to listen to it and download it too! :)

Open Road - the little cassette - was my companion in Vietnam in 1971. Helped me cope. Thanks, man!
