One of my favorite cases of an old poem being put to current music (Syd Barrett's take on James Joyce's Golden Hair also comes to mind). Absolutely loved seeing Donovan perform 'Eldorado' at the Tower Records in NY in 1996 while promoting the Sutras (unforgettable)!

And, as his strength Failed him at length, He met a pilgrim shadow -- "Shadow," said he, "Where can it be -- This land of El Dorado?" "Over the Mountains Of the Moon, Down the Valley of the Shadow, Ride, boldly ride," The shade replied -- "If you seek for El Dorado."

I was surprised Donovan opted a poem so bleak. He clarified his Zen point of view on the theme. Different, I think, from what Poe thought. Anyway, song is so sad and beautiful it brings me to tears. Thank you for posting.

Wow. It's as if he's singing to himself about his life.
