Can We listen or sing together, to remember the deep sadness of our world and to develop our selves? Because there is no other, we have to act the lovely other, to become ONE.....

It says here (after a comment from you???): "The comment has been removed". Strange! Who does thing like that? The comment I saw in my email about this seemed quite OK!

I think it's from an "old" Yiddish musical: Youtube won't let me give you the URL but just google "Donna donna sholom secunda". Sholom Secunda is the guy who wrote the music to that song!

You are absolutely right, the words are just a metaphore and it is about Jews being taken to the death camps.

It's not from a musical, it';s an old Yiddish song...

My favourite Donovan track, I love its melancholic undercurrents

Yeah! It's from some musical, perhaps. But I love Donovan's version - it's the one I grew up with (and so's Donovan!).

Hi all after seeing all the theories about the origins of this song i found that Donovan covered a Yiddish song called Dos kelbl and played by german folk duo Zupfgeigenhansel. So if you search here in youtube Zupfgeigenhansel - Dos kelbl you can find the original song. Donovan's cover is a great perform anyway!!
