Doc Watson is (was) brilliant! It's too bad his nephew Richard always just about ruins his songs with all that senseless noodling over Doc's words!!! YUK!!!

Simply great version by Doc and Friends. If you like the song, you might enjoy Bobby Bland's interpretation.

I have loved the doc since "cotton-eyed Joe." But St. James Infirmary takes me back to Cab.

No. Both of you. Hugh's version is fantastic, so is this. Its down to taste really but the song is a huge amount bigger than any of them. Doc's version does it brilliant justice. Hugh's in my opinion doe too. Cab Calloway's version is very interesting and Armstrong's version is amazing. Just Please let the song be. Anyone who can pull this song off deserves a tonne of respect.

But Earl Hines' version only has 4,000 views...who really cares? We know who we are....

Laurie now 400K, Bobby Bland 250K, Cab Calloway maybe 300K in all. Even Arlo and Van Morrison have more hits than Doc on this tune. What does any of it prove? The song is bigger than the players.

Well, Richard kind of ruins it.

I've heard it said that 'blues' is the musical form which is 'closest to reality' ... and this piece can stir the soul to the core.

Great video. I am a huge fan of Doc Watson, and was sorry to hear of his passing. Deep Water Blues has been a long time favorite. With your permission, I would like to submit my version of St. James Infirmary Blues for inclusion as a video response. Thank you for your time and consideration. Sincerely, Hacksaw Henry
