This continual fascination that I have for Dinah Washington is simply amazing. I have tried to listen to other singers, and admittedly there are some who really thrill me like Aretha Franklin, Marlena Shaw, Freda Payne, Ernestine Anderson, Patti Austin, Diana Ross, Diana Krall, there are others, yet something is missing from this modern day crew of singers that's currently out there, I wish I could pinpoint it. Perhaps it's the musicians who no longer exist, that were able to feed singers with that level of musicianship that could launch their inner emotions. Never the less Dinah is truly in a class by herself, she never sang a bad note, she was always well acquainted with the subject matter of her songs, and always transmitted the most important quality of all, the feeling generated in her soul, yes I said it 'Soul', everyone has one, yet sadly enough most singers are so busy focusing on their exterior attributes that what is really going on within them never rises to the surface. The soul that they really possess becomes suppressed by outer world influences. Still Dinah mystifies me beyond accurate description, above Sarah Vaughn, Billie Holiday, Rosemary Clooney, Nina Simone, a young Della Reese, all who are dear to my heart, yet Dinah still remains the Queen on the throne in my book.Frank Charles DodsonAuthor of 'Wednesday's Child'Xlibris Publishers.
