@Sao CungdocIts a cover of Bob Russell's song (music Carl Sigman) - she recorded 1949. Six years later Dinah sings not copying Billie's style but in her own style and as the movement of the time six years gained her a bit more blues allowance into the mix, where Billie's rendition was sung to an "of the time" orchestral jazz backing. Dinah's rendition in this one is live so has the rawness that you don't get in studio unless its loose. I don't think you need to compare the two - they are both chilled and moving. Love the sax in this version. One of my favourites.

I believe the alto player is Herb Geller? And this tangy Dinah vibrato is almost a later Esther Phillips.

She copies Billie Holiday's style in this one, but it does sound good.

If you close your eyes and listen, you can almost feel like you're in the club. All dressed up, looking good, feeling even better. Smile at the table next to you as the sax moans. Dinah Washington swaying to the music on the stage. That's what this song does to me. She sings me into the moment.

Many of today's singers, like Christina Aguilera and Mariah Carey and the somewhat younger singers on 'Glee' make the huge mistake of starting with the crescendo and working up from there, with silly vocal acrobatics along the way. The list goes on. They should be listening to Dinah Washington and Sarah Vaughn from this era. For a gifted vocalist, less is always more, and they honor the songs this way. Thinking about the lyrics is rule number one. The whole idea is to perform, not show off!

Wow! It's better than Billie's. I'm honestly suprised. I will be listening to more of Ms. Washington's music, that's certain.

So do I! And I love anything that Billie sings. But this one's gotta go to Dinah!
