Desert island from the album Holiday, the third full album from The Magnetic Fields. The album was originally released in 1994 on Feel Good All Over. Merge Records reissued it in 1999.

Lyrics:

I'll be the madness that carries you away

I'll be the sadness to light your darkest day

I'll be the desert island where you can be free

I'll be the vulture you can catch and eat

Desert island love is all around

Desert island where you can laugh aloud

Desert island everywhere's a beach

Desert island that's what I wanna be.

We'll develop muscles from cracking coconuts

Let our clothing drop off feel each other's butts

Start a better country where we can get things done

Make a fortune turning sand to silicon

Desert island love is all around

Desert island where you can laugh aloud

Desert island everywhere's a beach

Desert island that's what I wanna be.

While we're still holding on counting days until we're gone

Can we spend some time alone in our free love zone

Desert island love is all around

Desert island where you can laugh aloud

Desert island everywhere's a beach

Desert island that's what I wanna be.

The summer this came out I listened to it at least ten times a day. Amazing song. And the "feel each other butts line" is perfect.

But I've loved this song for almost 20 years...

Really? I really like "feel each other's butts". I think it keeps it kinda cute and upbeat. Sounds playful and innocent. If I thought it sounded overly sexy, I'd probably think it was annoying, though.

The other thing about this is that it's ONE GUY sitting in his bedroom roping together his catchy little ideas onto cheap tape. It's not a bunch of musicians who bought good instruments and good gear and rented a space and put their whole lives on hold just to churn out repetitive music. And furthermore, the songs are, for the most part, not even long enough to repeat themselves THAT many times. In fact, for what it is, it's a pretty f'ing detailed album. "Trouble I've Been Looking For"? Damn...

@KingCrimson776 That's the base of minimal pop, which is what this is. It is hypnotic, ethereal, & layered with much going into the texture.. It is not supposed to be progressive like KC, Dream Theater, Yes, Genesis etc.. It is exploratory in its own way though. I will listen to say Larks Tongue In Aspic II for the changes & Bruford & Muir playing off of each other. These guys create an entirely different listening experience just as fun for me.

This simplicity is simply stunning. It's like the platonic idea of pop music.
