The record was sent to all to all members of the official fan club around 1987.

This is the demo for it.

I think this song was originally planned for Depeche Mode to cover on Music for the Masses, maybe for a bonus track on a remastered version, but then scrapped and given to Martin for his Counterfeit e.p.. Possibly a b-side, but I doubt that it would be for anything after Music for the Masses. This sounds earlier than 1987, but whatever.

This song is a Sparks song and covered by Depeche Mode. That's the only truth and always will be like that. However it is nice to hear this version.

Actually the lyrics are pretty deep if you can ignore the superficial issue that bothers you. Check out the songmeanings website and read the analysis on the original Sparks page, or the repost of it on the Neko Case version.

Martin later did another version of this Sparks song, which ended up on his first Counterfeit album 1989

I have this record. I can tell you for sure that this is a Depeche recording. Jesus Christ, some people don't have a clue

I'm pretty sure this is Depeche Mode, from the Fan Club in 1987. It sounds like a different recording from the one Gore used on Counterfeit.

Apparently, it IS a genuine Mode recording....it was supposedly given away free on a 7 inch flexi to members of the DM Fan Club as a Xmas gift in 1987. I never joined the club, but i can't believe I never knew about this aside from the version of Counterfeit. Sounds like Gahan doing backing vox at the end. Lovely song, but horrible lyrics. Rhyming 'unfaithful' with 'faithful' there, geez. Makes the 'houses trousers' rhyme on NLMDA seem like genius. :)

@TheDepecheModer Yhea... You're right, but interprets on Tour for The Masses "Never Turn Your Back on Mother Earth" the duo Sparks, but not recorded for any disk, but Martin Gore's Counterfeit included on his album. =)
