Maybe, You are right. I don't know, how it was, but I think, all children were interested in Western Music. They copied music with tape recorders. There was an actor/singer/songwriter Vladimir Vyssozki, who was banned from Radio and TV, but in the 70s his songs were copied by tape. So, maybe every other music too. What I wanted to say is: Maybe Reed was an "Oldtimer" - but he was a man of himself and he didn't "play". Of cause we knew, that he wasn't a modern Rock'n Roll Star or "Johnny Cash".

His "style" was an imitation of stale, older American music. It is interesting that the upper class kids in the former USSR -- the children of the privileged communist elite -- preferred more up-to-date Western music, like the Rolling Stones -- only they could afford the expensive Western records and tapes.

Everybody has the right to dream and to live his dreams. Dean Reed was no imitation. He was a real person, born in U.S.A, and sang real in his style. Love it or not... But don't look for explanations of any socialists activities. Dean Read was, indeed, very himself.

This is awful. A less than mediocre cover of the 1949 American pop classic made famous by Vaughan Monroe. But what could you expect from the Soviet socialists? The elite there could get one of 2 cars -- a Volga, which was a 1940 German Opel -- or a Lada -- which was a 1969 Italian Fiat. And they apparently could get very bad, stale imitations of old 1949 American pop music too.
