They had a name for people like him: useful idiot. What I don't understand is why he would live in a grey, cold dump like Moscow with its stacks of state owned concrete public housing when he could live in the USA where you could buy anything to your heart's content. You can just drive down the street and see the gorgeous multi-colored cars with their chrome and tailfins and dual exhausts. My father was a Buick dealer then and I lived for what beautiful demonstrator he would drive home every night. We have color television and people lived in private homes where they can live as they please without some KGB thug listening in. We can go to the super market and buy whatever we want whenever we want and not have to stand in line for three hours for a loaf of stale bread if we're lucky. It's no surprise they offed when he was no longer useful.

These are fairy tales for kids. The USSR had its problems but they were not caused by the regime per se - it just had to spend too much on the military because, well, the Stated forced us to do so. If we hadn't had enemies around us, we would have produced more consumer goods. Today the Russian elite licks American and EU asses and therefore they feel safe.
