At the end of the 60's he lost his Brother, Mother and Father within an 18 month period, he was unhappy at home and I think all that took its toll, as of course it would.. Alongside which by the early 70's you can hear his breathing becoming slightly raspy because of the cigarettes indicating whats was to come. Life got in the way of greatness. But I adore Dino!

I think more than anything Dean was searching for something... Cathy Hawn didn't work out and didn't help Dean, but his problem was, i think, that he felt like something was missing in his life and had no idea what it was and what to do about it. So, i think he more or less came to terms with that and that marrige was NOT the answer for him and decided just to live his life and do the best he could for that last decade and a half. I read that no matter what it looked like, he was content.

Do you suppose alot of his downward slide in the mid 70's had to do with his ill advised marriage to Cathy Hawn ? I understand she caused Dean a great deal of stress and anxiety during their brief marriage ? I've always said his biggest mistake was divorcing Jeanne.

Please don't think i'm trying to foul up Dean's reputation cause i'm not. He was human and a great one. I have daydreamed about Dean quittin smokin and what not in his 40's and sounding and looking great till he was 80 years old. That would have been AWESOME. That was not to be. But,,, He kicked ass for a SOLID 30 years and we were so lucky to have him. He had a hell of a run.

You say doing drugs, i say "taking". It's fairly well known that Mack Grey was a Percodan addict and Dean would use them sometimes even in the early 50's and if your being "carefull" not to overdo it, you can, over years, wind up an abuser. We'll never know exactly what was going on but my guess is an eventual then ongoing addiction to pain killers made worse by a back injury in the 70's and added to the mix a Valium problem. I say Valium because he got so thick tongued and slurry after 1975.

Yes what you've said is true however to me (and I'm a huge Dino fan) it seems he aged a decade between the years 1969 and the early 1970's. Perhaps he just got burnt out. I don't think he was doing drugs at this time (percodan later) Remember that by 1974 he ended his TV Show, recorded his last album for Reprise and filmed his last meaningful film (Mr.Ricco) all to the disapointment of a young Dino fan at the time.

Well, he turned 50 in 67' and i'll turn 50 in October. I'm definitely not as bright and peppy as i was at 45. I think, leaving aside what drugs he may or may not have been taking, he was getting a little burned out doing the show by this point. The shows were getting weaker overall and he'd been at it for 5 seasons and had seen and heard it all. Don't forget the previous and rather hectic 25 years in the business that preceeded the NBC show.

Definitly noticed a change in Dean around this time, he was no longer as animated as he was in the 1965-69 seasons, I don't know what caused it whether he was just getting older or the marital problems were catching up to him (he was now seperated from Jeanne) but he was surely slowing down.
