NigelIIRichardson These bands were really good, but the reason Arctic Monkeys came out ahead was frankly because the lyrics were just way better than all these other guitar bands while still having killer riffs and great anthems. The press got there after the monkeys already started selling out gig after gig.

They supported the Arctic Monkeys when they were doing smaller gigs back in their hometown. As both bands are from where I am from (Sheffield) and they use the same influence, they're bound to sound a bit alike.

I discovered these guys yesterday and to be honest, they sounded more like Band of Skulls to me, at least on the first listen...especially at the beginning...but these sort of comparisons never go beyond the superficial stage for me, in the sense that yes, a new band/artist can indeed remind of something I've heard beforehand, but from then on, they're their own thing...so long as they're not a complete and obvious rip-off ;) anyway, these guys look promising...must listen to more

the fella i was initially chatting to raised the point that the arctic monkeys are musically superior to the other sheffield bands. i think that cannot be defended. for starters technically in terms of scales and techniques they are very basic. but as you say musical superiority cannot be based on musical complication. and unless you beleive it can be based on market saturation, which we as rock and roll fans probably wouldn't, then music cannot be superior. hence AM are not musically superior
