It isn't "splitting hairs" to quote what the word of God actually says, rather than what we think it might say, or what we want it to say. It is not only not splitting hairs, but is rather a gigantic chasm of difference affecting every aspect of the believer's life. Are we required to sacrifice all we are for the people who shake their fists in rebellion to God? Or is that type of sacrificial living only applicable towards believers? The difference is astonishing.

Me too! 15 years later, and I'm no longer a Christian, but I still keep the CDs and listen to them because a) it's great music, and b) it is HONEST, which is something lacking in most modern music, Christian or secular.

hmm. it seems to me the love we have for one another, among those who share this tight bond of the spirit, yes, we do love those with whom we have kinship differently than we love others, but that doesn't excuse lack of love. We ought not split hairs too much here: we are to reflect God's love and that love is not dispensed differently to those who receive it than it is to those who are its subjects but not willing participants...yet.

Toby Mac misquotes John. The verse does not say "fellow man." It says "brother", that is, a fellow believer in the Messiah. A very, very important distinction. It is clear throughout the Torah, Tanakh, and the B'rit Chadashah (NT), that the people of God are to be loved sacrificially, "as you love yourself", but believers are not held to that standard for the world. Love, yes. Love "as you love yourself?" No.
