Land value is the commons because it is created by the community of all people and not by the 'owners' of particular pieces of land. We could say to the owners: pay us the rent. We already do this to some extent via the property tax. We could continue to take back what is ours by shifting the bulk of taxation off of our earned incomes from labor and real capital investment in the real economy onto community created land and natural resource values. Sure, go ahead use OUR land; pay us the rent in full.

Have a dedicated playlist of David's anthems taking on just about every major global issue needing scrutiny. One of the few honest and openly free voices of our times who must be heard. Please support him wherever he plays.

hey david, we shared this song at our Commons Summer School in Germany in June 2012 and you should hear them singing it now, I guess it's not an overstatement to say that it became the hymn of our Sommerschool. Thanks!!

Claiming commons as private property is theft. It violates the traditional rights to all users of that common property. Converting commons to western privatised property, whether 'owned' by individuals or the state, has been accompanied by force and bloodshed. eg the English enclosures since the 16th century, the colonisation, occupation and dispossession of indigenous peoples the world over. The degradation of the last commons: the air we breathe and the world's oceans, is proceeding apace.

also, in places where there is no individual private property rights, there is greater social disparity. Look at any Indian reservation. You can't claim tracts of ocean as a fisherman. I don't have to have an immediate solution to these problems. In the 19th century you didn't have to answer the question, "who will pick the cotton?" to know that slavery is wrong.

claiming property as a commons when it violates the property rights of the individual is wrong, and causes more chaos then when the individual voluntarily subscribes his property to a commons. The things that we call a commons, today, are often the things which cause the most damages. i.e. roads, oceans, etc. the issue in the tragedy of the commons is that it is not clear how the commons is established, and imo is nearly always established through the initiation of force against an individual.

Commons stewardship is not the same as state ownership. Privatising the commons has resulted in so much human poverty, hardship and environmental degradation for the greed, wealth and power of a few. In the end we all suffer the results in the alienation of common entitlements leading to environmental degradation of our environment, our planet.

I claim your house as a commons, and I say its for 'conservation', then a few years later I sell it at a reduced price to foresting companies whom paid my way into office. I'm the state. private property is the solution not the enemy to the tragedy of the commons.

Great song, David. I caught your show at OccupySolidarity in Olympia, and am fanning out. Thanks, DPBristol for the chords. . I think it will be good to let people remember what "The Commons" is, and who is stealing our National Heritage.

@LibSoc68 what radical left movement? all I see is a bunch of sectarianism and factionalism with no unity, dialogue, or debate - let alone mass rallies or movement building. we're all focused on theory & puritanism and not on actually changing anything. I'm with you comrade but there is no radical left movement to join at this point... the best we can organize for at the moment is sparking class consciousness so workers begin to unionize again. that's not even radical, but it's a start.

Is there ever was a musician to whom Tom Lehrer's son "The Folk Resistance Army" applied 100%, it's David Rovics. Powerful lyrics, not much else.

This great song is not in The David Rovics Songbook. I figured out some chords (correct I think) and thought someone else might be interested: Capo 4th fret Verse: C/ FCG/ C/ FCG/ FCG/ FCG/ C/ FCG Chorus: CG/ Am FG/ FCG/ C F(G)C
