A few reasons: 1) Bowie, Lennon and others were just prolific writers and musicians. They were born that way. 2) "History makes the man"...the rock explosion in the 60s and 70s was partly a product of the changing times. 3) Hard work: Bowie and his contemporaries were STEEPED in music.
