@Robert Frapples. "His main appeal" is a distinctive textured vocal of great range (which may or may not be to your taste) and an incredible songwriting talent both musically and lyrically. (Up to and including Scary Monsters IMO) It is all just taste and opinion at the end of the day.

Robert Frapples, this "freakish anomaly" is the godfather of alternative music who paved the way for many many artists and shaped the world of rock music as we know it today. David Bowie is a visionary and a pure genius.

Bowie is, perhaps, the most hyped and overrated pop star of all time. His thin voice is mediocre at best, and his main appeal is his androgyny. I, for one, do not appreciate androgyny, and find him to be a freakish anomaly with no real talent.

Here, where men sit and hear each other groan;Where palsy shakes a few, sad, last gray hairs, Where youth grows pale, and spectre-thin, and dies; Where but to think is to be full of sorrow And leaden-eyed despairs, Where Beauty cannot keep her lustrous eyes, Or new Love pine at them beyond to-morrow.(Keats "Ode to a Nightingale")

I heard this on a live bootleg record of a Bowie concert that I bought at a swap meet in 1978. I have not heard this song since 1979. For some strange reason, I awoke with this song in my head, I Google'd and I found it here. The internet is amazing.

Bowies version is still awesome, and he is an amazing poet, and it's good that he would do a loving tribute to the original work like this.

Yea, except he didn't write it. Jacques Brel did.

Magnifique, une des meilleurs de Ziggy, et peut-être même de Bowie.

Haven't heard this for about 20 years and it sounds just as incredible as it ever did. Such a haunting work of art and a brilliant performance of it.
