An Occasional Dream is a song written and performed by David Bowie. It is from the album Space Oddity in 1969.

Lyrics:

I recall how we lived

On the corner of a bed

And we'd speak of a Swedish room

Of hessian and wood

And we'd talk with our eyes

Of the sweetness in our lives

And tomorrows of rich surprise...

Some things we could do

In our madness

We burnt one hundred days

Time takes time to pass

And I still hold some ashes to me

An Occasional Dream

And we'd sleep, oh so close

But not really close our eyes

'Tween the sheets of summer bathed in blue...

Gently weeping nights

It was long, long ago

And I can't touch your name

For the days of fate were strong for you...

Danced you far from me

In my madness

I see your face in mine

I keep a photograph

It burns my wall with time

Time

An Occasional Dream

Of mine

An Occasional Dream

Of mine

An Occasional Dream

Of mine

David Bowie, ovvero uno, nessuno e centomila. Quarant'anni di carriera all'insegna delle metamorfosi, dell'incessante ansia di percorrere e precorrere i tempi: "Time may change me, but I can't trace time" ("Changes", 1971) è da sempre il suo credo. Un genio mutante, dunque. Ma il trasformismo è solo la più appariscente tra le arti di questo indecifrabile dandy, incarnazione di tutte le fascinazioni e contraddizioni del rock e, in definitiva, della stessa società occidentale.

So great to find I'm not alone in being enamored of this song, I love the comments, which say much of how I feel about it. I agree with Polycarpx about that line, and there are so many others throughout Bowie's songs. For me this song and 'Letter to Hermione' invoke such intense feeling/images: wistful, like an echo of a love lost but lingering in... a photograph, an occasional dream

"the days of fate were strong for you... Danced you far from me." Hermione Farthingale (as in "Letter to...") was a dancer who Bowie had an important early relationship with in terms of the effect she seems to have had on his creativity, turning him from Laughing Gnome chancer to this gentle, honest songwriter a couple of years before he started to hide behind the fey-voiced Ziggy songs. Beautiful.... thanks for posting, and love the selection of pics.
