An Occasional Dream is a song from David Bowie's 1969 album Space Oddity. It contains a mix of folk, balladry, and prog rock. Held to be "the first Bowie album proper", and his first deemed worthy by record companies of regular reissue, Space Oddity featured a notable list of collaborators, including session players Herbie Flowers, Tim Renwick, Terry Cox, and Rick Wakeman, as well as cellist Paul Buckmaster, multi-instrumentalist and producer Tony Visconti, and bassist John Lodge. Bowie's former girlfriend, Hermione Farthingale, was the object of "An Occasional Dream", a gentle folk tune reminiscent of the singer's 1967 debut album.

this song and 'letter to hermione' are my 2 fav tracks on this album.i can't help but feel they're leonard cohen influenced but w bowie's musical arrrangement far outweighing cohen's tho cohen was/is and always will be a poet first and a musician 2nd. except, for these songs, bowie seems to match cohen's lyrical eloquence [well, others too but i meant as songs of love]

*... of hessian and wood*I've been meaning to post a Bowie song for, like, ages, and +Doug Thompson's Madonna post spurred me into action! I know Bowie's 'Space Oddity' album isn't his debut, but when I bought it, in 1988 or so when it was reissued on CD for the first time, I believed it was. And, indeed, many Bowie fans would rather ignore anything that came before it anyway (not me, I love the Laughing Gnome...)Anyway, David Bowie in character as a hippy folkie prog rocker.

buckley ('strange fascination') refers to bowie's use of vibrato - especially in the 'thin white duke' period, when the bowie thickened her voice and sang in a lower key. also, check pegg's great tome - where he comments in some detail about bowie's vibrato in the young americans sessions. neither of these great bowieologists mention the spectral beauty of this great early song - one of the best love ballads of the late 60s.

In all the books on Bowie I've read, I've still to come across the word 'vibrato'. This is insane, given how B's vocal facility with this is one of his most striking assets, showcased to supreme effect here. In fact, I'd put the end of this track forward as candidate for perhaps one of David's most Olympian feats singing-wise - the faultless maintenance of the vibrato through that endless last note is astounding.

@rgainsburg Yes. Well thank you and I'm glad we're not getting into a flame war as so many posts tend to go into. Actually I posted the Ron Paul thing as a bit of a joke because my girlfriend on here, lishfish, was watching the video and said "David Bowie is sexy." I jokingly replied, "yeah but he's not as sexy as Ron Paul."

@iluv2viddyfilms I fully support people's freedom to make their own choices, including speaking about Ron Paul at every waking opportunity. I admire the dedication of Ron Paul supporters, but fanaticism is never a good sign. Yes, I gained something from your post, and its good-natured tone. Happy 2012!

@rgainsburg Ron Paul's supporters are insanely dedicated to the point of fanatical. Ron Paul supports each individual's freedom to make their own choice, even if that choice is off topic such as talking about soup recipes on a David Bowie music video site or discussing economics because we want to know how much it really would cost to get Major Tom up their in the sky. If I'm hallucinating, I'm probably right up their with the Bowie crowd. rgainsburg. I hope you gained something from this.

@iluv2viddyfilms You know, I like Ron Paul, but his supporters creep me out. This is a David Bowie song. It contains no reference whatsoever to Ron Paul. If you think it does, you are hallucinating and are therefore potentially dangerous. If you know it doesn't, but feel compelled to make comments about Ron Paul anyway, then you are displaying symptoms of fanaticism, and are therefore potentially dangerous.
