Mott the Hoople are only remembered for this one song, which David Bowie wrote for them.Maybe if they hadn't arrogantly rejected Suffragette City and Drive In Saturday, they would be remembered for three songs rather than just one.Bowie, on the other hand, will be remembered for about forty songs, and ranks right up there with The Beatles and Pink Floyd.

I can understand Bowie's version better than Mott the Hooples version. His voice is more clear!!! Great!!

@ tony mcgrath.......Personally, I prefer Bowie's earlier recordings. "The Man Who Sold the World" and "Hunky Dory" are brilliant albums. Then of course, his "Ziggy" phase which spawned many singles. I don't mean to say that David's work after this wasn't as good, he just became far too commercial (for me). His earlier writing was the epitome of Bowie's genius in my humble opinion.

David Bowie -All the young dudes , gave this to Mott the Hoople to kickstart their careers , got into his music after listening to his greatest hits album "Changesonebowie" back in 1976 and couldn't believe how someone could write such brilliant songs

The bottom-heavy fuzz and Bowie's thoughtful, even mournful phrasing makes this version definitive in my opinion...although Mott's take is really, really damn close. Now let's see a legal MP3 version, wot?

Hmm, the chord changes in this song are really good

We'll never know how the finished product would've sounded on the Aladdin Sane album if Mott the Hoople didn't record it themselves. One thing i do like with Motts version is how they turned it into a glam rock anthem of sorts. Ian Hunter's impromptu dialogue at the end, like he singing to his followers, adds nicely to it.
