RIP Marian McPartland, 8/20/2013.
March 23, 1984: Pianist Marian McPartland sits down with Dave Brubeck, current guest on her long-running 'Piano Jazz' radio show, in which a different artist (usually jazz-oriented) visits and, in between conversations about their life and career, the visiting musician and Marian play intimate duets. Earlier in this installment, when the tapes weren't rolling, Dave made a joke about his lack of confidence in playing alone. After their commanding finale of his megahit "Take Five," she cracks, "What do you mean, 'No chops?'" and they laugh together. Hearing this great tune played just by dueling pianos is so cool.
Dave left us on December 5, 2012. Marian, active through the very end (she ran her own Facebook page and made her last post when Cedar Walton died the day before her own death!), followed on August 20, 2013. Somewhere on another plane, they will surely play many more duets.
