AT THE HOP-- Danny and the Juniors--American Bandstand 1958---a hit written by Arthur Singer, John Medora and David White and originally released by Danny & the Juniors. The song was released in the fall of 1957, became a hit on "Bandstand" and reached number one on the US charts on January 6, 1958. Spliced into the clip was a rebroadcast of Danny and the Juniors '58 Beech Nut Saturday Night show appearance staged on the Atlantic City Boardwalk at the Shelburne Hotel

The first days of Rock 'n Roll saw many artists with hit records on the radio appear on TV and one of it's early messengers was American Bandstand host, Dick Clark. As many of you know, Dick Clark passed away April 18, 2012 at age 82. Word is he is hoping to launch a new show up in heaven called "World Band Stand" RIP

Dancin' and happy

Be happy, don't worry. Just keep on dancing. Remember the words of one of the greatest rockers of all time:

" When i was 5 years old, my mother told me happiness was the key to life. when i went to school they asked me what i wanted to be when i grew up. i wrote down "happy ". they told me i didn' t understand the assignment. i told them they didn' t understand life " - *John Lennon*

A man asked Lord Buddha "I want happiness" Lord Buddha said first remove "I"---that's ego. Then remove "want"--that's desire. See, now, you are only left with "happiness"

The song must have been brand new then. I hardly recall them jitterbugging to it. Remember how Bandstanders did the bop to this &" r & r Is Here To Stay". As a matter of fact the original unreleased recording was called "Do the Bop". They changed the song because the bop would eventually die, but the hops & teen dances were here to stay.

Look at the couple at the bottom of your screen at 1:18(girl white top w/ scarf). This is a example of great Philly Dancing during the rock and roll era. You didn't need a steady partner. A boy could pick any girl and they would look like they were dancing together for years!

Can you imagine a current-day 'boy-band' performing in button-up shirts, pressed trousers and a belt? I would LOVE to see that. This was style!

Where's the band? Jerry Lee Lewis and Buddy Holly refused to lip sync on the show - the only two that I know of.

On this day in 1957 {August 5th} the Philadelphias-based 'American Bandstand' debut on the ABC-TV network... The first record that was played was the Crickets' "That'll Be The Day" {peaked at #1 for 1 week on Sept. 23rd on Billboard's Best Sellers chart}... And the first two live performers were Billy Williams and The Chordettes; Mr. Williams sang "I'm Gonna Sit Right Down and Write Myself a Letter" {it peaked at #3} and The Chordettes did "Just Between You and Me" {it reached #8} ...

Originally titled: DO THE BOP, but at the advice of Dick Clark (who told the group The Bop was pretty much over as a dance fad), he suggested they change the title (and lyrics), to reflect what/where teenagers typically danced...

Notice the cop at 2:34 watching over the the "rowdy" crowd of teens (or body guard for Mr. Clark).
