Well things change fast, but this too shall passBetter carve it on your forehead or tattoo it on your assCause who can tell, when the clock strikes twelveIf today’s become tomorrow or if it’s all just gone to hellMy friend makes rings, she swirls and singsShe’s a mystic in the sense that she’s still mystified by thingsBut scared to ask, how can nothing seem to last?Cause like a cancer in your body, it all just goes too fastWe think too big, we think our self is one whole thingAnd we claim that this collection has a name and is a beingBut deep inside, when every cell dividesWell it sets upon the rule that states self-interest is divineAnd cancer, too, lives by this golden ruleThat you must do unto the others as the others unto youAll for the best, cause that’s all the life acceptsAnd so we kill it like a buffalo, with awe and with respectWell don’t ask God, just holler at the skyCause she’ll tell it to you plainly in the clouds that whisper byAnd praise the shapes, and then praise the way they changeAnd they’ll teach you not to pray to light without you pray to rainSo I pray to hands, and I pray to needsAnd I pray to blades of grass to find forgiveness in the weedsBut as for health, I just never did believeAnd so I never prayed myself except to those that prayed for meThe story goes, or the way that I was toldThere was a king that always felt too high and then he fell too lowAnd so he called all the wise men to the hallAnd he begged them for a gift to end the rises and the fallsBut here’s the thing, they came back with a ringIt was simple and was plainly unbefitting of a kingEngraved in black, well it had no front or backBut there were words around the band that saidJust know: This Too Shall Pass

Is it just me, or is this song about cancer? I've listened to it dozens of times now, and a lot of the symbolism (cells dividing, grass and weeds, praying for health, etc.) seem to allude to it, and cancer is explicitly mentioned in the fourth verse. But I don't get what the ring is supposed to refer to (although it is mentioned that his "friend" makes rings...)

Danny Shmidt sounds exactly like an older version of a guy I know and it's kinda scary.

The first time I listened to this, I was riding the buss to a stressful job, feeling pretty depressed. I actually cried when hearing the song. It's really quite powerful.

When I first heard this song, I was kinda expecting,"engraved in black- well it had no front or back, but there were words around the band, said 'one ring to rule them all one ring to find them, one ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them.'"
