Poor people had no help at all but the churches who insisted on conversion and treated them like dirt. Both Kennedies were running around on their wives and one left Mary Jo to die a slow horrible death rather than face the music. And then there was Operation Northwoods and American plans to invade Canada. Maybe we have to get Dylan or Prine to write about that side of things. Oh - and Merry Christmas!14 years ago

Poignant, yes - and much of it true as far as it went. But then, beating your wife and children or sexually abusing them wasn't against the law, and it happened in lots of families. Everyone knew who they were, but no one talked about it as a man's family was his to do with as he pleased. And people didn't get divorced since there was nowhere for the women and kids to go - mostly their own families wouldn't even take them in because of the 'shame' of a failed marriage.14 years ago
