Oh my. What an emotionally appealing musician and person he was AND this is one of my faves of all time. I introduced my mother and sister to his music in the mid-70s after Souvenirs came out. Dan was a guy who we all could bond together with. I really believe my mom and I became a lot closer through the DF spiritual connection. I believe a lot os did in that time period (and after). Dan died on my mothers birthday and I know she was patiently waiting in turn to give him a huge hug and a smile for all that he had done for our family. Bless you Dan - we miss you.

Finally paid enough attention to this one to figgure out how to play this on an "electric" guitar- - . You just need to slow it wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy downnnnnnnnnn it the timing. I always played it the same on an electric as I did on my acoustic. No wonder it always sounded like crap!

I graduated from a small Catholic High School in La Verne in 1970. What an OUTSTANDING time for musical concerts in So. Cal. Shoeshineidaho, get out! Saw Dan at the Greek Theater when I was a sophomore in College. Fools Gold opened and I loved them. Fools Gold, Tim Weisberg, Dan and Tim, Dan, Tim and Fools Gold. It was about a 5 hour concert. Will always remember it.

Yeah, I agree. Thank-God I got the album (vinyl) and a GREAT record-player and Marantz reciever, and a pair of "Koss" headphones! "Fools Gold" was a great backup band for his style though! And a damn hot band for him everytimeI saw him "live" :)

@baretree298 Sorry, can't agree. Live versions aren't meant to reproduce the studio version, only represent them. I think this one does a wonderful job of communicating the ineffable quality of the emotion in the song, albeit in a less polished ambiance than the studio recording.

Back when people (musicians and fans alike) cared about EXCELLENCE in music, not some circus and bread entertainment charade. RIP Dan, we miss you.

I remember seeing him in DC back in the 80's and he told the crowd he thought he would never play this song again. I guess it's just too painfull to perform, let alone to listen to. Man, the pain of lost love so deep, it crushes the blood in your heart.

Still can't believe your gone, Dan. This song was & sadly still is, the story of my life, no matter how many years pass. Nothing & no one has come about to change it. It burns in my soul as does the memory of seeing you sing so many times, so many years ago, & again, for the last time, 10 yrs. ago. And I thank God, you sang this once again! Couldn't believe it! Did you hear me screaming for it? :) Fly away my sweet bird. May your spirit soar high in the heavens. Love always. J

I remember buying Netherlands on 8 track in 1978. Enjoyed it and checked out his earlier material. The Last Nail preceeded his commercial success, but it has always been my favorite. Incredible songwriter. Kinda got to know him through his lyrics. In later years, I suspected that he was struggling with his personal relationships....and was not surprised to learn he was getting a divorce. A shame he fell to cancer. I lost a blood brother to cancer, too. Both of them are missed.
