... but back then, they were a revelation. three cheers to them for coming up with a record like this in the wasteland that was liverpool in the late 90s, of all places. bravo.

you know, the more i look back on this band, the more i'm kind of amazed at how *hip* they were for the time. 1997 and and they resisted the temptation to be a little trip hop, a little bit grunge. the influences were impeccable: crime, suicide, stooges, velvets. i honestly think their closest compatriots were air, in that they created this pitch-perfect retro soundscape out of nowhere. nowadays, a band sounding like this would be par for the course in our mix and match pitchfork-approved world.
