I so agree with Simon it did seem a lot like motown the musical, before you hit the thumbs down button, it was a good performance, it's just that as a child all the music that both my parents ever played were artists like diana ross, aretha franklin, james brown, jackson 5, marvin gaye, supremes, smokey robinson, gladys knight & the pips, temptations, stevie wonder, sam cooke etc. my life has a motown soundtrack and I thought simon's comment nailed it. Clay did deserve to win though!

With no high points and no low points, and lots of repetition, this song is very hard to sell effectively. Levi Stubbs set the mark at the top to begin with and Clay here very clearly lives up to that standard. In this case, Simon doesn't know what he is talking about.

Simon is ridiculous -- didn't recognize talent standing right in front of him. The Clay/Ruben competition put Idol on the map that year. Clay's voice is still be the best ever, IMO. He is one funny talented man!
