Fragment from the DVD 'Hellhounds on my Trail - The Afterlife of Robert Johnson' (recorded september 1998, Cleveland-Ohio).

Quote from Ken Helie, Whitleys tourmanager at that time:

"So we show up on Friday in Cleveland, head over to the venue, just the two of us, bands and crews and gear swirling all around, just like it always was at these festival types of shows, and off to the side, just me and Chris hanging out, just a guitar, the trusty boot board, and a Beta 58 vocal mic to worry about. We get bumped from sound check, like we always did . . . so no one hears Chris play until we get called to the stage to perform. Now, as anyone who's seen the film of this performance knows, Chris turned in a rendition of 'Hell Hound' that night that was unforgettable. He was Robert Johnson that night. One man, one guitar, one boot, and he tore it up. As we were leaving, the legendary Robert Lockwood Jr. pulled me aside and asked if I worked for Chris. I replied that I did, to which he said,

'Tell that boy he plays like three men.' "

Everyone who does this song does it differently. The single cone resonator guitar is not really an instrument, it is a mechanical expression of what is in the artist's Soul. It is loud and dangerous and unpredictable. Like anything powerful. That is why it is most suited for the blues, and why it sometimes sounds tragic. It pierces the heart. Like Chris did.

No one since the death of Robert Johnson and Son House does blues like Chris Whitley and Rory Block. Nobody.

To all the negative commenters out there: If you don't understand this, don't be an idiot and just say it sucks. Just admit that you don't understand it, and if you don't, I feel sorry for you. He's channeling Robert Johnson and throwing in his own demons for good measure. A brilliant performance by a really inspired and undersung musician. RIP.

Awesome..ok, not too accessable to the unfamiliar, or those unwilling to experiment...the blues is a bitter flavour, Cm an aurally unkind key...trust me, pls..this guy's heart is being plucked here...ace..

I cant believe the people saying there is no feel here, that he's a shit guitar player. If you claim to know what the blues is and, or you play the blues, but you say things like that, my friend, you're missing the whole point of the blues.

Was listening to '' Children of Bodom - Hellhounds on my trail''.. then I watched this vid, and.. Damn this guy is a god at the guitar.. even if this is far away from my favourite music and REALLY different than Neo-classic Death Metal..

He was a flame. A haunted, burning, twisted flame. We miss you, Chris. We don't forget you, every day.

@tonykendrick Chris is an amazing and inspiring artist. IF you check my info you'll see I have cds. ;) I think people are just used to hearing things lilt and swing in a more traditional way. There are a million different ways to interpret. And even the old cats had their individual concepts of feel. :) Chris has an beautiful and diverse catalog of work, imho.
