Cape Town Youth Choir (formerly Pro Cantu): "Baba Yetu"

Conductor: Leon Starker

Soloists: Jacob Buys and Kate Farquharson

Composer: Christopher Tin (b. 1976)

Performed at Hugo Lambrechts Auditorium, Cape Town (16th July 2013) in a joint concert with the Whiffenpoofs of Yale

Baba Yetu

Christopher Tin (b. 1976)

Soundtrack - Classical World Fusion

Composed as the theme song for the video game Civilization IV and featured on Tin's album Calling All Dawns, Baba Yetu was the first piece of music composed for a video game to win a Grammy Award. Originally composed for full orchestra, choir and soloists, it was rearranged for SATB a capella choir by Tin in 2011. The text is a translation of the Lord's Prayer in Swahili.

Baba yetu, Yetu uliye

Mbinguni yetu, Yetu amina!

Baba yetu, Yteu uliye

Jina lako litukuzwe

Utupe leo chakula chetu

Tunachohitaji utusamehe

Makosa yetu, hey!

Kama nasi tunavyowasamehe

Waliotukosea usitutie

Katika majaribu, lakini

Utuokoe, na yule, muovu e milele!

Ufalme wako ufike utakalo

Lifanyike duniani kama mbinguni. Amina.

Our Father who art in heaven,

hallowed be Thy name.

Thy kingdom come.

Thy will be done

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day

our daily bread,

and forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us,

and lead us not

into temptation,

but deliver us from evil. Amen.

A beautiful performance, but it's shame the soloist gets a bit drowned out by the rest of the choir.

I love this so much! I just wish that they had the soloists sing into a mic.

I love how when the music starts to swell it looks as if many are fighting the urge to dance :) so beautiful :)

South African Youth Choir's version was way better. But good attempt :)

By FAR my favorite live performance of this. This is so much better than all of the other "big" productions that fail to capture the spirit of this song.
