This is my first and probably only youtube video, I searched forever to try to find the Bushwackers version of this song but couldn't find it so now I'm uploading it for everyone's viewing and listening pleasure. Obviously the song isn't mine and neither is the picture they are owned by their respective owners under copyright law and I make no claim to them. This is just here to be shared.

Rita Macrae. This is simply beautiful, the piano is the perfect accompaniment.

I have this on vinyl. It is a great rendition. It is the first version I ever heard. Eric Bogle is a great songwriter. Over the years I have acquired versions by the Pogues, Liam Clancy, the Fureys, the Dubliners, John McDermott. Some of my people were at or near Gallipoli (Dardanelles) but more were on the Green Fields of France and in Flander's Fields.

I've heard all the versions you can find - but the Bushwackers version has always been my favourite ever since I first heard it back in the mid 80's.All the other versions just sound the same with their lilting drawls, they're OK, but don't sound dinky di ... and Williamsons version has weird pacing as he 'blokes it up' from time to time. This version is perfect, great voice, get piano accompaniment.I just wish they recorded it with the missing verse!!

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, We will remember them. LEST WE FORGET

"To the Texans in the ranks the sound of battle was deafening: the boom of artillery; the loud reports of dozens of nearby rifles and the steady popping of thousands more distant; the explosions of shells and the whine and hiss of lead balls and steel fragments. Men whooped and yelled; others screamed to be heard by their comrades" - Texas soldier in Hoods Brigade at Antietam fighting in the famous cornfield. "All war is Hell" - Gen. William T. Sherman

Thank you for showing this video. I have also looked everywhere for this version. You have made my day. Thanks again. Beneath the Southern Cross is my favourite, would love to hear more of that album.

One of the commendable things about the character of Australia as a nation is a distinctive anti-militaristic, even pacifistic bent (there are plenty of negatives to our national character too, but I won't discuss those in this post). Jingoism and nationalism are and always have been completely incongruent with the Australian political landscape, which cannot be said for many other countries (*). I think the main reason for this is that one of the main historical events that established Australia as a culturally distinct nation (rather than a British colony) was the Gallipoli campaign. Having a horrible tragedy in a senseless war as a defining moment in your national history has a definite effect on cultural values, I would say. I believe the converse is also true, two countries I can think of (Vietnam and the USA) which achieved independence from colonial powers through bloodshed remain rather militaristic. [*] - particularly, most pacifistic countries now are pacifistic due to experiments in militarism and jingoism going poorly.

My pleasure :) this version is by far my favourite and honestly I was surprised that it never saw the light of day in the youtube-verse until I posted it. I'm glad I could provide it not just to you but to everyone :)
