Since I added a cover versions section to our FTG channel some people have contacted me saying " You`ve got to hear Burton Cummings version of Nothing Rhymed - it`s great ! " Well I was curious - so I tracked it down ! I should say I know nothing about this guy other than he is a Canadian singer/songwriter with a career dating back to the 1960`s . So is this a good version ? I`ll let you be the judge of that !!!!

Great songwriting acknowledged by a superior cover. And jon47m, if you don't think there is any feeling in Cummings' version you must be deaf.

I do like like this song. Gilbert O'sullivan is excellent. However, Burtons voice is much much better. This is probably the only song that I prefer the cover version better than the original. The vocal talent of Burton Cummings is much superior and sounds perfect for this great song from Glibert. Thanks to both.

No feeling is portrayed by the singer, when Gilbert O'Sullivan wrote and performed this, it was from the heart, paying homage to the starving populations of this world. It is a brilliantly composed song that rightly deserves to be copied, but please, please, please, pay just a little bit of heart felt homage to the lyrics and the original reason for the songs composition

@cottonsoft Agreed ! If you`re gonna do a song as great as this - with such brilliant lyrics - at least get them right ! This is like drawing a moustache on the Mona Lisa !

This is a good cover but would be a lot better if he had sung the correct lyrics!!

One of the better versions I've heard but it seems that no singer can get the Gilbert vibe...Except me of course ;-)

This is the only version I've ever heard and I love it. What I would really would hope to see is the song your backyard by Burton on youtube but I can't find it. If anyone has it, please post.

Hi again - Yes I remember you were one of the people who told me about this version. I dont think its bad , but it would have been better without the lyric changes. At least I have learned more about Burton Cummings so thanks for that !

Mohawk! A million thanks for uploading this one. I'm from Winnipeg, Burton's hometown. In fact, I went to the same high school he went to. I knew this version of Nothing Rhymed first and thought that Gilbert was doing a cover...until I researched a bit more. Burton's big hits were "Stand Tall" and "I'm Scared". The Guess Who's biggest hit was "American Woman". Thanks again for this.

Hi Jeydee - Guess what - iv`e never heard of The Guess Who either ! lol The only name you mention that i`m familiar with is Bachman Turner Overdrive - they did have some chart success over here. I just thought i`d share this with Gilberts fans to see what they thought . But the lyrics ! Instead of " Never again will i make that mistake" we get " Mother please tell me please say i ache "!!!! WHAT ?? LOL

Hey Mo...i'm surprised you had never of Burton Cummings, he formed the Guess Who in the 60's with Randy Bachman. Their biggest hits was These Eyes, The Guess Who seperated and Cummings went on a solo career and had hits with Stand Tall, I'm Scared and a few others. Randy Bachman went on to form Bachman Turner Overdrive. Thanks for uploading this one, i didn't know he had recorded this song.
