I think this song was originally meant to be about slavery. The lyrics vary from version to version/singer to singer. In some cases there doesn't seem to be any references about men (other than slave masters).

Lottie Kimbrough wrote this song. Lottie was a Black blues woman that recorded in the 1920's. Buffy's version is one of my favorites along with the original. Great music!
