I haven't watched a ton of Buddy, and my ears aren't the best so I'm probably wrong. But, am I right to say that Buddy didn't mess with things like paradiddles? From what I've seen, his stuff seems mostly based on single strokes and 3, 5, and 7 stroke rolls like you mention in the video

It all depends on the drummer Eli Mehmeti. Look at it this way, what you are seeing Buddy do is the culmination of 40+ years of practicing. The key is to keep practicing. Each year you will see improvement. My father, a professional drummer, knew Buddy personally and what separated them from the rest was the stick technique. They knew how to make the sticks bounce and do a lot of the work rather than looking like a nut swatting at a swarm of bees. Once they had "mastered" the stick handling, the rest fell into place and could be expanded upon. Others can probably produce the same sounds but the masters did it with an economy of motion and therein lies the difference. Hope that makes sense. There is a video of Carl Palmer playing a solo on a snare. Check it out. His forearms could be in a vice because he has mastered the technique of controlling the bounce of the sticks rather than forcing them.

How long would it take an intermediate jazz drummer to full develop this technique at a fast tempo if he were to practice it for 30 minutes a day?

You are a professional through and through! Incredible technique, very, if not ludicrously, modest and you have the golden pipes of a 1960s/70s radio man (yes a DJ, but before it got ruined). Wish I lived in Colorado, as I would love to be student:) Down in here in Georgia. Dangit. With the devil and all.

Great technique to implement into my own style of playing. I'm trying to stay away from the 'match-grip' style of holding my left drum stick, but it's a hard habit to break. Thank you for the lesson maestro!

My dad was a HUGE Buddy Rich Fan (R.I.P.) I have his old drum set from the 40's and myself are a drummer....I've been practicing/messing around with some Rich ...until I've seen this...I've been doing it between my thumb and index finger and just Bouncing it ...it worked but, took too much energy and straining! This seems way easier!

Looking good! Thanks for posting - looks like throwing out the traditional grip middle-finger controls the double tap moeller? I'll approach it differently next time, thanks again

I personally believe that Buddy didn't use any type of finger technique, or any other technique that anyone claims was his "secret." He basically could just play twice as fast as anyone has ever been able to. There's only one Buddy.
