I LOVE LOVE LOVE this song! Song/music are wonderful memory triggers (a person can hear a tune and is immediately transported to the first time they heard it). He thought it was too mushy, maybe not hatred. Iovine called him up when The Promise came out and was wondering why it was left off and Springsteen told him to calm down, told him it was a hidden track.

Bruce hates this song, according to the new issue of Rolling Stone: The interview with Jimmy Iovine. In fact, the whole article seems to paint Springsteen in an unflattering light, at least to me. He reportedly flung Born to Run into the pool of the hotel he was staying at, after he heard it for the first time.
