Back in the days these groups had to be as creative as they could whenever they appeared on television to perform. You didn't have VH-1, MTV, or any of those TV channels to show music videos. Yeah, you had The Ed Sullivan Show, American Bandstand, and eventually Soul Train; but whenever these contemporary groups made any kind of appearance on television or in a live concert, they had to perform in such an entertaining way that they were constantly reminded that they only had one chance to make a positive first impression on people seeing them in person or on television for the very first time. Not like now where contemporary groups just put out a music video and let it sell their records and CDs for them.
