This song was written by the edge and is about the Irish being sent to van diemans land in Australia as slave prisoners by the british scum bag government. and today in modern times the british gangster government are still committing atrocities all over the world. mass murdering innocent poor people is all they are good at. I hope some day they have to pay for all the evil and mass murder they have done. In keeping with what you have stated..it (the song as performed by U2) is also a tribute to John Boyle O'reilly..an 1860-ish Fenian movement leader.. who was sent to the Tasmanian penal colony for his role in resisting British occupationary rule of Ireland. He escaped his confinement and settled in the U.S. in Boston where he later became part owner and editor of a newspaper called the pilot.. he also became a poet..and has stautuary dedicated to him called the John Boyle O'reilly monument
