1976 (Shirley Bassey hosts Bobby Goldsboro on her 1976 TV Variety Series. In the first clip section, Bobby performs one of his greatest hits, 'Summer The First Time'. In the second section of this clip Shirley Bassey performs live one of the few Country songs that she has ever recorded, 'Somebody Like Me' at a 1972 Talk Of Town Concert. This song was made famous by Eddy Arnold in the early 60's. Shirley is known more as a POP recording artist/entertainer but she really brings this song out as a wonderful crossover. Shirley sings to the ladies in the audience and one can see that back then, people weren't used to having the light shined on them. They were as still as can be and it looks like they were stunned because she was performing directly to them. Great entertainment, and their reaction, or the lack of it, is harlarious. Today, everyone wants to be in the lime light and they don't care if they make fools of themselves doing so! What a difference 40 years makes!
ABOUT Bobby Goldsboro & Summer The First Time:
Bobby Goldsboro (born January 18, 1941) is an American country and pop singer-songwriter. He had a string of Pop and Country hits during the 1960s and 1970s, including his signature #1 classic "Honey", which sold well over one million copies in the United States. "Summer (The First Time)", a 1973 reminiscence about a first sexual experience, was a Top 20 hit in the US and the UK.[6] Using a powerful repeating piano riff, 12-string guitar, some organ playing, and a dramatic orchestral string arrangement, the song was suggestive enough to spark some controversy.
LYRICS - Summer The First Time:
Was a hot afternoon
The last day of June
The sun was a demon
The clouds were afraid
One ten in the shade
And the pavement was steaming
I told Billy Ray
In his red Chevrolet
I needed time for some thinking
I was just walking by
When I looked in her eye
And swore it was winking
She was thirty-one and I was seventeen
I knew nothing about love, she knew everything
I sat beside her on the front porch swing
And wondered what the coming night would bring
The sun closed her eyes
As it climbed in the skies
And started to swelter
The sweat trickled down
The front of her gown
I thought it would melt her
She threw back her hair
Like I wasn't there
She sipped on a Julep
Her shoulders were bare
And I tried not to stare
As I looked at her two lips
Then she looked at me, I heard her softly say,
"I know you're young, you don't know what to do or say.
But stay with me until the sun has gone away...
And I will chase that boy in you away."
Then she smiled
And we talked for awhile
Then we walked for a mile to the sea
We sat on the sands, and a boy took her hand
But I saw the sun rise as a man
(instrumental)
Ten years have gone by
Since I looked in her eye
But the memory lingers...
I go back in my mind
To the very first time
The touch of her fingers...
