Bobby Darin - Simple Song Of Freedom (Live and with a Tux) A mega star in his own right, taken way to soon from this world. He was crossing over from the nightclub circuit into the arena of folk music, where his pacifist views were clearly developing.

An amazing story: This was quite a break for a man in a tenure track trajectory for full professor in the school of Frank Sinatra. The break was both musically and politically. Yet not as great a break as some my think. He unfortunately had a bad heart. We remember him for his contribution in all his phases from urban pop, to doing original and superb interpretations of American standards with a big band, to his final political statement recorded here.

Wasn't this song written by Bobby and Tim Hardin had a hit song with it then Tim Hardin wrote some song which I can't remember and Bobby Darin had a hit with the song? They swapped hit songs.

Bobby Darin was a pop singer and did very few folk songs. He was always part of "the establishment".

Wow. I thought Bobby Darin would be really out of place if he wasn't in a nightclub, doing Mack the Knife and stuff like that, but he was pretty good at transitioning to something completely different.

Bobby Darin was a risk taker, and a man who dreamed big! When the curtain fell in 1973, his talent as an actor, composer, showman, and singer never left the stage. I realize that it may seem strange to begin my tribute to Bobby Darin with another man's song. James Taylor and Bobby Darin both understood the depths of a canyon, so I start with the most poignant lyrics to a song ever written, "I've seen fire and I've seen rain/I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end/I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend/But I always thought that I would see you again." The genius named Hank Williams wrote about these "men with broken hearts" and when you view this clip of Bobby, singing his own song,"Simple Song Of Freedom" ,you will understand his bravery and Love for humanity.I never saw Bobby Darin perform in one: not at the Copa or Sands, but I have seen all of his television shows, where, as Dodd Darin recounts,"Simply watch him on video and you can feel the energy and excitement come bursting out of your television!" It is crystal clear that Bobby Darin's emotions and tenderness, intertwined in lyrical form, were drawn from a wish...a wish to always be around for his son. When Kevin Spacey's movie, "Beyond The Sea", appeared on that magical screen, of course some poetic license was taken. However, Mr. Kevin Spacey, lovingly captured Darin's bravado and style! Bobby Darin was not only a supreme singer of songs, and a showman without equal. He penned many great songs:"Dream Lover", "Simple Song Of Freedom", and many others including "As Long As I'm Singing", with it's driving rhythms; and it never failed to make our collective hearts soar. Kevin Spacey's vision was lovingly created from a powerful idea. The idea that an artist lives on through his Loving contributions to the world stage. You see, at the conclusion of "Beyond The Sea", Bobby Darin doesn't die. As Bobby Darin, played by Mr. Kevin Spacey, dances with a young boy named Walden Robert Cassotto, our collective spirit knows that "As Long As" Bobby Darin's singing, he is indeed alive in our hearts and minds. WHAT A MAN! Those "Wuthering Heights" that he had to climb, but in his heart he knew this fact,"People say I was made for this/Nothing else would I trade for this" for Bobby's wish was a wish that was the embodiment of all our wishes.
